LOS ANGELES,CA - Sheriff's deputies evicted people from an urban community garden to make room for a warehouse Tuesday, touching off a furious protest in which actress Daryl Hannah and others climbed into a walnut tree or chained themselves to concrete-filled barrels. At least 39 people were arrested.

Authorities cut away branches and used a fire truck lift to bring down the "Splash" actress and another tree-sitter, who raised their fists as they were removed. It was not immediately clear whether Hannah was under arrest.
"I'm very confident this is the morally right thing to do, to take a principled stand in solidarity with the farmers," Hannah said by cell phone before a fire truck raised officers into the tree.
L.A. Police chief Johnny Beaufort rubbed his chin and chuckled softly.
"I certainly say I do admire Daryl for her convictions, but the core problem is, this is private property, and the fella who owns it was big hearted enough to have already allowed the farmers to squat on his property for the last 12 years. He recently decided he wanted to pursue a different path with it, and that's his hard legal choice. Sounds to me it's a case of give an inch and they'll take a mile if you ask me."
Beaufort stroked his moustache, wrapped his hands around his knee and leaned forward
"You know what's the big mystery to me, though? With all of her millions, coupled with her obvious sincere convictions, why didn't miss Hannah just buy the damn property and simply give it to the farmers? Seems to me that's how a rich Hollywood star activist should approach a case like this, if you ask me."
Unbeknown the Beaufort, the reason Hannah elected not to buy the property for the farmers was related to the fact that "I'm already financially stretched out on the 'Save the Zebra Mussels', 'Save the Redwoods', and 'Save the Mermaids' already, and after all, you can hug a tree and a Mermaid, but you can't hug a Zebra Mussel!"
